Three Signs You Need to Replace Your Roof
Three Signs You Need to Replace Your Roof
If you have noticed wear on your roof or if you are experiencing roof problems, you might be tempted to just do a repair on your roof. However, there are some signs that you should replace the roof entirely rather than paying for repairs that will not last. Here are three signs you need to replace your roof.
Worn Shingles
Roof shingles have a lifespan, which varies depending on the type of shingles you have. When shingles reach the end of their life, they can become curled or bent at the edges. There may also be bald spots on the shingles where the granules are missing. Some shingles may actually be cracked, which poses a threat for further damage in the case of heavy storms. If your shingles are only worn in one place due to a specific problem, a repair might be sufficient. But if a large portion of your shingles are showing wear, it is probably time to replace the roof.
Algae and Moss
In some climates and in some environments, roofs can develop algae or moss. Algae usually occurs on roofs when the moisture content in the air is frequently high. You will see the algae as dark streaks across your roof. Moss can grow on roofs in areas that have high moisture and are shaded. Moss not only looks bad, it can cause damage to the interior of the roof. You may need to replace your roof if you have either of these problems.
Your Roof Is Old
How long your roof lasts depends on what type of roof you have. The average lifespan of a roof is 20 years, although some roofs only last about 15 years. If it has been 20 years or more since your roof has been replaced, you will need to make sure that you get it done before the storm season hits. You will also want to replace your roof if it shows significant signs of wear if you are unsure how old it is.
