Hurricane SeasonHurricane season is in full swing, and we’ve already had over 10 named storms in the Atlantic this year. When a hurricane is headed your way (and they always are in Florida) it’s important to prepare for possible roof damage. Follow these tips to minimize damage and get a head start on repairs to your roof during a hurricane:

  • Check your insurance policy

Before a storm hits, discover how much insurance coverage you have for hurricane damage. If you don’t understand your policy documents, call your insurance agent right away and they should be able to explain everything to you. One of the most important pieces of information to gather is your deductible for storm damage since that’s the amount that you will have to pay out of pocket before your insurance coverage picks up the tab.

  • Check your warranty

If your roof was installed in the past 20 years, there’s a chance certain damage will be covered by the roof’s warranty. However, if you were not the homeowner when the roof was installed, it can be difficult to find out who the roofing material manufacturer was. This is why it is important to ask these questions when purchasing a property.

  • Inspect your roof

Do a pre-storm inspection to identify any areas on your roof that are already missing shingles or otherwise damaged. If you do notice damage, monitor that area inside your home closely as the rain begins as leaks are more likely to occur in areas where the roofing is damaged. 

  • Trim back trees

Trees hanging over your home are dangerous, especially during storms with high winds, like hurricanes. Always keep limbs and branches trimmed back away from your roof.
  • Clear gutters and drains
Water cannot drain off of your roof properly if the gutters and drains are clogged. In a hurricane, your roof needs all the drainage it can get. Be sure to clean out all gutters, drains, downspouts, and anywhere else on or around your home where water drains. Keeping trees trimmed back and installing screens over your gutters will help keep them clear with less effort.

  • Video your roof’s condition

The day before the storm arrives, take a video on your mobile phone of your roof’s condition, including the entire area around your house. This video may come in handy for insurance purposes later on.
